Dairy Myth 5

Posted Sep 07, 2010 News & Notes, Farm Store News

Dairy Myth 5: Myth: Consuming dairy foods can increase the risk of heart disease.

Fact: A diet high in saturated fat regardless of the source will likely cause heart disease and not dairy foods. Recently, it was reported that the evidence linking saturated fat intake to heart disease is lacking (Siri-Tarino, P., Sun, Q., Hu, F.B., Kraus, R.M. 2010. Meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies evaluating association of saturated fat with cardiovascular disease. Am. J. Clin. Nutr. 91: 535-546).

Ever heard of this one?

Myth 4: Milk causes asthma.
Fact: While infants with milk allergies are more likely to develop
asthma later in life, there are no scientific data that support that consuming dairy foods makes a person asthmatic.

Beef At Country Dairy

Posted Jul 30, 2010 News & Notes, Farm Store News

Just to let everyone know, Country Dairy has beef for sale as well as dairy! Many may not realize that we have a beef herd as well as our milk cows. The beef herd consists of quality-raised steers. This spring we opened our very own fresh meat counter which is off to a great success. We have the privilege of having two very experienced meat-cutters cutting up our fresh beef. So come on in and get some very tasty fresh steaks for summer-time grilling. Another option and the best deal is to purchase quantities of beef by the quarter and half. You can order this from Rob at 231 861 4636 x102 for $2.20 lb. hanging weight. If you have any questions or would like to place an order, please call Rob. This is a great and economical way to fill your freezer!

Dairy Myth 3

Posted Jun 25, 2010 News & Notes, Farm Store News

Here's a question or comment that comes up fairly frequently when people find out I work on a dairy farm.

Myth 3: People with lactose intolerance should avoid dairy foods.
Fact: Lactose intolerance is often confused with milk allergies. Lactose intolerance is not an allergic reaction to dairy foods. Rather it is the inability to digest the milk sugar lactose. Lactose-free milk and yogurt are good alternatives to drinking milk for people that are lactose intolerant. Aged cheeses such as Cheddar and Swiss are also low in lactose. Many people with lactose intolerance can drink up to 1 cup of milk daily without problems (Miller, G.D., Jarvis, J.K. and McBean, L.D. 2000. Handbook of dairy foods and nutrition. 3rd ed. CRC Press, Boca Raton, FL.
NHS (Nurses Health Study). 1990. Harvard Medical School.).
